Iranians have long used traditional and natural remedies to cure most kind of illnesses. The tradition of herbal medicine goes back to several thousand years ago and recently there has been a sudden growth in number of Attaris, shops selling medicinal or culinary plants and herbs.

The Middle East is known as one of the most well practicing regions of herbal therapy. Iran itself is home to over 8,000 native herbs and spices, 2,000 of which are linked to aromatic and medicinal uses. While in Western culture the use of herbs is considered an alternative treatment, in Iran traditional medicine still retains a prominent status. The use of herbal medicine is more common among older people, but recently is becoming more popular with young people. Perhaps this is due to the fact that nowadays people are more aware of the dangers of chemical drugs, and therefore they trust more herbal therapy.

Herbal therapy is often used as an alternative treatment after the completion of proper medical examinations and diagnosis. In this treatment, herbs and spices are used, based on their properties, to eliminate the symptoms of the disease. Herbal medicine differs from synthesized medicine in so many aspects. First it takes longer than traditional medicine to take effect: while the results with chemical remedies is immediate, herbal remedies take a longer time and more constant usage in order to show their positive effects. Besides, herbal medicines have no side effects.

Most of the herbal remedies in Iran are produced domestically. This trend can be seen in the sudden growth of Attaris all over the country. Attaris are traditional medicine shops that sell herbs, spices and plant extracts. In their shops, you can find over 40 kinds of herbs and plants that allow a safe and chemical -free recovery to most medical conditions such as burns, colds, headaches, allergies and insomnia. Some of the most common spices and herbs you can find in Attaris include :cinnamon, turmeric, sumac, ginger, curry powder, garlic, cumin, cardamom, cloves, dried rose petals, coriander, mint, pomegranate seeds, nigella seeds, dried lime, calendula, sesame seeds and basil seeds. Along with herbs and spices, other natural products commonly found in herbal shops are henna, argan oil, avocado oil, teas, ointments and rose waters.

Thyme

Thymus vulgaris, is a small, perennial, evergreen shrub in the family Lamiaceae grown for its leaves which are used as herb. The thyme plant has an erect or ascending growth habit and possesses many woody, branching stems. The leaves of the thyme plant are linear and are arranged alternately on the stems. The leaves are densely covered in minute hairs and have numerous red-brown oil glands on the surface which take the appearance of small dots. The leaves can be green or variegated. The plant produces whorls of tiny pink, lilac or pale purple flowers on a terminal spike and tiny brown fruits, each with one seed. Thyme can reach a height of up to 50 cm (20 in) and can be grown as an annual or a perennial. Thyme may also be referred to as common Thyme and originates from the Mediterranean. Thyme leaves and flowers can be used fresh or dried as a flavored herb in cooking. Bees which collect nectar from thyme flowers produce a high quality honey. Essential oil can be extracted from the leaves and is commonly used in the manufacture of perfume or as a flavoring in toothpastes.

Red Rose

Red Roses are used in cooking as a flavoring ingredient or spice. Rose water (golab) and powdered roses are used in Indian and Middle Eastern cooking. Rose powder is added to sauces, while rose water is often sprinkled on many meat dishes. The most popular use, however, is in the flavoring of deserts such as ice cream, yogurt, jam, Turkish delights and rice pudding etc. Chicken with rose is a popular dish in Persian cuisine. Nowadays western cookery does not make much use of rose or rose water anymore. However it was a popular ingredient in ancient times and continued to be popular well into the Renaissance. In the west, it was most commonly used in deserts. Many traditional deserts in Europe, however, still make use of roses, such as Turron and Marzipan.

Lemon Verbena

Drinking lemon verbena tea helps to treat the respiratory system diseases by reducing the amount of phlegm. Lemon verbena can prevent the growth of cancer cells due to the large amount of antioxidant. It also has anti-candida and anti-fungal property that can be very beneficial for digestive system, and it is suitable for losing weight. Lemon verbena essential oil has bactericidal and insecticidal features, and also used in fragrance industry. This herb can be used as spice, herbal tea, or essential oil.

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is used for treating mood problems. Due to its soothing and calming prosperities, it is effective for reducing anxiety and muscle cramps. Lemon balm is known for healing headaches, memory loss, and soul fatigue. It contains rosmarinic acid and citral which have antiviral properties that can be used as anti-herbs.

Lavender

Lavender is one of the most aromatic plants in the world that is used as medicinal herb in traditional medicine of Iran, China, and India for many years. Lavender is believed to have antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to improve digestive system function and it is very beneficial for nausea, stomachache, and abdominal swelling. The linalool content of lavender is helpful to reduce blood pressure and the risk of heart diseases. It also improves blood circulation. Moreover, it is used to heal headaches, anxiety, and migraine. Lavender is effective for cleansing scalp and hair and is one of the best things for treating dandruff and lice. In addition to helping with hair problems, it is used to treat skin problems such as scratches, burns, and skin inflammation.

St. John’s Wort

This herb is highly regarded for treating mild to moderate depression and it is commonly used in pharmacy industry. The active chemical in St. John’s Wort, hyperforin, can be useful for treating depression and nervous pains. It also has anti-inflammatory property that can be effective in treatment of irritable bowel syndrome.

Sage

Sage has been effective in treatment of complications of insect bites from the past. It has been also used for boosting mood and life extension. Sage contains saponin that can stop bacteria growth and has antimicrobial property against candida-albicans which is the cause of many diseases. Using sage is very useful during the menopause. It can reduce the symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats. It is also effective in treatment of painful and irregular menstruation.

Rosemary

Rosemary is used as a natural treatment for constipation, meteorism, gut problems, and diarrhea. It helps to promote regular bowel movements and digestive system. Using rosemary can be useful for improving memory and mood, and it reduces inflammations. It is also beneficial for detoxing body.

Tarragon

Tarragon is a good source of iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, vitamin A, and vitamin C. It is mostly used as a vegetable in foods, but it is also used for medical consumption. Due to its anesthetic property, ancient Greek chewed it in order to soothe toothache. Furthermore, it was used as snake ant venom. Tarragon helps to improve digestion and heart diseases and is effective in treatment of obesity.

Peppermint
